Abstracts of Janet Krueger’ Presentations at COMMON 2001

Breathing New Life into iSeries Applications Monday, 5/14
Today, iSeries Shops (both large and small) are faced with more challenges than ever before. One of these challenges is keeping the application base competitive, which can include providing a nifty Web-based, GUI front end to tired green screen applications, completely replacing parts of the application portfolio with off-the-shelf componentry, leveraging new business intelligence tools, modularizing RPG code, or rearchitecting the whole application suite.

The Next Age of iSeries Application Development: Visions Monday, 5/14
If you were able to start a brand-new application development project, what options would you want to consider to minimize development time and support costs while fully utilizing current and future technology? How will those options change over the next 5 years? Can you visualize a state of the art application built in 2005, and predict what tools and skills will be needed to build it?

Java Development Scenarios
Tuesday, 5/15
This session provides an overview of why and when you should consider leveraging Java as an iSeries development language. It also discusses scenarios where it would be more approriate to continue to use RPG or COBOL, as well as times when an application generator would be more appropriate. It provides tips for incrementally updgrading the skill set of a traditional iSeries shop.

Sifting Through iSeries Application Development Options Thursday, 5/17
Which Application Development (AD) options are best on the iSeries? Tried and true COBOL? C++? A Generator? Not every application on the iSeries needs to be converted to Java, but what are the alternatives?

ASP Security and Privacy Policies
Thursday, 5/17
This session will provide a historical perspective on computer system security and privacy policies. The speaker will discuss what policies were needed in the past, including information on how and when they were enforced, and then show how the security models need to change when systems are connected to the Internet and solutions are shifted to the ASP space. An interactive discussion will be held about how to effectively distribute the responsibilities for maintaining a secure system between the customer and the Access Service Provider (ASP). The session will conclude with a discussion on what kinds of security breaches might occur, and how they can be dealt with effectively.
