Janet Krueger’s Seminars at TEC 2001

• What the Heck is an ASP?
Should I be one? Should I use one? IBM is now predicting that ASPs will take over application deployment and delivery during the next decade. You've probably seen this new term bandied about in the press; maybe it is time to stop and understand what it is! ASP stands for Application Service Provider, which is a new label for someone providing application access through time-sharing. In this session, the speaker will review the definitions and the trend, including a discussion of what kinds of services an ASP needs to provide, and what needs to be different about applications delivered through the Internet. She'll also talk about why a customer might consider buying application access, instead of setting up and maintaining systems in-house, as well as what risks such a customer would be taking, and how they might be contained. If you attend this session, be prepared to think about the whole world of applications in a different light than you did before.

• ASP Security and Privacy Policies
This session will provide a historical perspective on computer system security and privacy policies. The speaker will discuss what policies were needed in the past, including information on how and when they were enforced, and then show how the security models need to change when systems are connected to the internet and solutions are shifted to the ASP space. An interactive discussion will be held about how to effectively distribute the responsibilities for maintaining a secure system between the customer and the ASP provider. The session will conclude with a discussion on what kinds of security breaches might occur, and how they can be dealt with effectively. After attending this session, attendees will be able to knowledgeably discuss the full range of security exposures than can occur in ASP solutions, and understand the trade-offs and technology alternatives for dealing with them.

• Java Development Scenarios/Roadmap
This session will provide you with an overview of why you should consider Java as an AS/400 development language and a guide for when and how to transition both your skill base and your code base into Java.

• Breathing New Life into AS/400 Applications
Today, AS/400 Shops--both large and small--are faced with more challenges than ever before. One of these challenges is application modernization, which can include providing a nifty GUI front end to tired green screen applications or Web-enabling legacy applications, completely replacing parts of the application portfolio with off-the-shelf componentry, leveraging new business intelligence tools, and everything in between. This session will help to put these choices into a workable framework and provide a starting point for users who are about to embark on the application modernization path as well as some new incentives for those who are waiting on the sidelines.

• iSeries Application Development Options
Which developers are supported most optimally on iSeries? Is the assortment different than on the AS/400? Not every iSeries application needs to be converted to Java, but what other options are going to be supported in the future? Is RPG dead? What new front-end options will IBM be endorsing? How can I effectively deploy applications from two different sources without totally confusing my users? This session will provide answers to all of these questions and more. The presenter will review all of the different development groups currently building iSeries applications and talk about what investments might be appropriate for each.
